🏋️ai-fitness-coach (squatAI)
what it is. a tiny web app that watches you squat through your webcam and tells you, in real time, whether your knees are caving, your back is rounding, or your depth is fake. no signup, no app store, no trainer.
why i built it
i have a home gym problem: no one to correct my form. the first time i filmed myself squatting i cringed for three full minutes. i knew what a good squat looked like in theory. my body disagreed.
what i learned
- ml in the browser is a gift. no backend, no latency, no privacy conversation. the camera feed never leaves the tab.
- rules still beat fancy models when feedback has to be instant and interpretable. "your hip angle is 110°, aim for 90°" beats a confidence score.
- cue design is the whole product. too many cues and you tune them out. one cue per rep, spoken, short.
- shipping is a muscle. the first ugly version went live in a weekend.
what's next
extending to deadlifts and overhead presses, then wrapping it in an interface that doesn't look like a hackathon demo. most of the hard work is writing better cues, not training bigger models.
